Dream of the Infinite, part 5, 2010

ABOUT THE ARTWORK
'Dream of the Infinite' is an installation created by artist Lanny Bergner for the Bremerton High School Commons. He notes, "It is my intent that 'Dream of the Infinite' be an uplifting spark for the imagination, one that inspires contemplation of infinite possibilities." Bergner placed four suspended bronze mesh sculptures under skylights in the school's Commons area. He used different colors of crushed glass called "frit" to color the sculptures. Hung from wire, the sculptures gently move with the room's general air movement. On the curved wall of the Commons, he installed a wall sculpture using bronze mesh and colored glass frit. The layers of mesh cause a "moiré" effect of shifting and overlapping patterns that confuse the eye. Bergner created these sculptures using common industrial materials such as styrofoam and plywood, but he is seeking to "transform these seemingly mundane materials into otherworldly constructions and environments."

ABOUT THE ARTIST
Anacortes-based artist Lanny Bergner creates mixed-media sculptures and site-specific installations for public spaces. He has been creating hand-worked organic and geometric artworks out of industrial metal mesh since 1983. The otherworldly quality of Bergner’s artworks often contrasts to the everyday materials he uses to construct them. Born in Anacortes, Bergner was an apprentice to Skagit County-based sculptor Philip McCracken in 1976. He went on to receive a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree from the University of Washington in Seattle, and a Master in Fine Arts degree in sculpture from the Tyler School of Art at Temple University in Philadelphia.
