Salmon

Salmon represent journeys and lifecycles, as well as the Pacific Northwest in general. There is also a deep connection between salmon and the many tribes of Washington. Northwest Lummi artist Dan Friday notes, “Salmon and fishing have been a way of life for people of the Northwest since time immemorial. From the reef nets of the Salish Sea to the dip nets, traps, and weirs of the Plateau, many tribes are known as the Salmon People.” Artists use the salmon as a powerful symbol in many artworks in the State Art Collection.
