Year of the Pig: Happy Chinese Lunar New Year (2019)
In celebration of the Chinese Lunar New Year (February 5, 2019) – the Year of the Pig – we present a selection of artworks in the State Art Collection that feature pigs.
The Pig is the twelfth animal in the Chinese zodiac. According to one story, the Jade Emperor said the order would be decided by the order in which the animals arrived to his party. Pig was late because he overslept. When he arrived, he was the last one and could only take the twelfth place in the zodiac.
Pigs are energetic, kind, and generous. Once they set a goal, they will devote all their energy to achieving it. They are hard-working, but they also enjoy entertainment and material goods. They rarely ask for help, but are always willing to help others. Pigs never suspect trickery, so they are easily fooled.
In Chinese culture, pigs are the symbol of wealth. Their chubby faces and big ears are signs of good fortune.
In Chinese astrology, each year is related to a Chinese zodiac animal according to a 12-year cycle. Those who were born in the years 2019, 2007, 1995, 1983, 1971, 1959, 1947, and 1935 are known as Pigs.
Happy Year of the Pig!
