ABOUT THE ARTWORK

Artist Tom Askman created nine cast bronze sculptures for the Airway Heights Correctional Center. The sculptures represent the animals native to the Airway Heights area in Eastern Washington. The animals include a magpie, dog, marmot, crow, a pair of geese, three quail, a coyote, owl, and a hawk. Askman placed each sculpture at a different location in the central courtyard. He intends his sculptures to share the "healing power of nature." He hopes they will remind inmates of a "world that holds variety and promise."

ABOUT THE ARTIST

Spokane, Eastern Washington-based artist Tom Askman creates paintings, drawings, and sculptural installations for public spaces. Askman is a professor of painting and drawing at Eastern Washington University in Cheney, where he has taught since 1972. He received Bachelor of Fine Arts and Bachelor of Education degress from California College of Arts and Crafts in Oakland, California. He received a Master of Fine Arts degree from the University of Colorado in 1968.
