Announcing 2019 Governor’s Arts & Heritage Awards Honorees

(August 23, 2019 – Olympia, WA) – The Washington State Arts Commission (ArtsWA) is pleased to announce and congratulate the Governor’s Arts & Heritage Awards honorees for 2019.

The Governor’s Arts & Heritage Awards (GAHA) recognize individuals and organizations for their significant contributions to Washington’s creative vitality. This year’s eight honorees join 255 other exemplary individuals and organizations honored with a Governor’s Arts or Heritage Award over the past fifty-three years. The Governor’s Arts Awards, established in 1966, recognize and honor individuals and organizations for their significant contributions to the arts and cultural development of Washington State. The Governor’s Heritage Awards, established in 1989, recognize and honor individuals and organizations for their significant contributions to preserving traditions and cultural heritage in Washington State. This year’s honorees are:

Juan Alonso-Rodríguez (King County)Arts Award – Individual Artist
Michael Spafford (King County)Arts Award – Legacy
The 5th Avenue Theatre (King County)Arts Award – Organization
Anne Banks (Thurston County)Arts Award – Education
Matt Cadman (Chelan County)Arts Award – Advocacy
Juan Manuel Barco (Snohomish County)Heritage Award – Individual Artist/Practitioner
Northwest Native American Basketweavers Association (King County)Heritage Award – Organization
