ABOUT THE ARTWORK

Artist Joan Stuart Ross created the painting Water Quilt I using oil stick and collage elements. The artist’s interest in water inspired the artwork. She notes, “I have combined visual ideas of the colors of water and its depth, its ebb and flow and movement of the undercurrents and rhythms of water… Water imagery conjures ideas of the conscious and the unconscious mind as well as visual narratives about the mysterious undersea world.”

ABOUT THE ARTIST

Seattle-based artist Joan Stuart Ross creates two-dimensional artworks that combine encaustic (made using melted wax), painting, printmaking, and collage techniques. Experimenting with process and repetition, Ross creates layered visual narratives that explore natural forms and personal symbols. Ross earned a Bachelor of Arts degree from Connecticut College, and Master of Arts and Master of Fine Arts degrees from the University of Iowa.
